I am the Integrator, and our Visionary constantly bypasses me by walking straight into department meetings and assigning pet projects to my managers, which completely disrupts our quarterly Rocks. How do we eliminate this boundary crossing without alienating the founder?
This dynamic is the classic Visionary end-run, and it completely undermines operational execution. When a founder assigns pet projects directly to department heads, it strips the Integrator of authority, destroys manager focus, and leaves the team guessing about actual priorities.
To stop this, bring the issue to your next weekly Same Page Meeting and use IDS® (Identify, Discuss, Solve) to address it directly. The rule on the Accountability Chart is non-negotiable: the Integrator is accountable for managing daily execution and holding department heads accountable to their quarterly Rocks. The Visionary operates above or alongside the Integrator, driving high-level relationships, big ideas, and culture, not directing tactical department work.
Establish an idea parking lot. Explain to the Visionary that every new idea, process change, or market initiative must be presented to the Integrator first, rather than thrown directly at staff. The Integrator filters these ideas, tests them against the current V/TO®, and determines if they should be tabled, killed, or turned into an issue for the next quarterly planning session.
Instruct your department heads that if the Visionary approaches them with a new initiative, their standard response must be: That sounds interesting, let me clear that with the Integrator so we can adjust our Rocks. Once the founder realizes their ideas must run through the operational filter, the boundary crossing stops, and team execution stabilizes.
