Our leadership team is using the weekly five minute Segue to air passive aggressive grievances under the guise of their professional best. How do we stop this subtle sniping and keep the Segue focused on building healthy team energy?
The five minute Segue of the Level 10 Meeting is designed to transition your minds from working in the business to working on the business. It requires sharing one personal and one professional best to build trust and shift energy. When leaders use this time to take passive aggressive shots at other departments, they are abusing the structure and poisoning the trust required for the rest of the meeting. To kill this behavior, the facilitator must call it out immediately in real time. Do not wait until the meeting rating at the end. When a leader shares a best that includes a veiled complaint, pause the meeting. Remind the team that a professional best is about a win, not a weapon. State clearly that if there is friction between departments, that is an issue that must be dropped to the Issues List and solved during the IDS portion of the meeting, not smuggled into the Segue. As an owner or Integrator, you must enforce this boundary consistently. If a leader cannot share a genuine win without criticizing a peer, they may have a deeper alignment issue. Instruct them to restate their professional best cleanly. By keeping the Segue strictly positive, you protect the psychological safety of the room and ensure your team enters the operational review with a collaborative mindset rather than a defensive posture.
