How should a leadership team run the quarterly State of the Company address so non-leadership employees actually understand our V/TO and support company Rocks?
A State of the Company address fails when it sounds like a corporate monologue filled with abstract financial metrics that frontline employees cannot relate to. To make the message resonate, translate the high-level vision into clear, operational reality and celebrate concrete execution.
Deliver the address within two weeks following your Quarterly session. Keep the entire meeting to forty-five minutes. Follow a strict, consistent agenda:
- Review the Core Values and share real, specific examples of frontline employees who demonstrated those values during the past quarter.
- Share the Core Focus and progress toward the 10-Year Target and 3-Year Picture in plain language.
- Review the previous quarter Rocks with absolute transparency, celebrating completed Rocks and directly owning those that fell short.
- Announce the company Rocks for the upcoming quarter and explain why completing them matters to the day-to-day work of the frontline.
Do not bog staff down with complex balance sheet data. Focus on top-line revenue, customer impact, and the operational goals that directly touch their daily responsibilities. Ensure the entire leadership team is present on stage or on camera, united in messaging.
Conclude with open, honest Q and A. When frontline employees see that the leadership team holds themselves accountable to quarterly Rocks and lives by documented Core Values, the V/TO stops being an executive document and becomes a cultural standard that drives company-wide buy-in.
