We are bringing in a fractional AI developer to build our automated customer workflows. How do we represent this external resource on our Accountability Chart without disrupting our internal reporting lines?
Fractional resources and external consultants must be integrated into your Accountability Chart to ensure clear lines of communication and accountability. Even though they are not full-time employees, they still occupy a seat and must report to a specific leader.
Do not place a fractional resource on the chart as a floating entity. They must report directly to the seat that is ultimately accountable for their deliverables. For example, if the fractional AI developer is building workflows for customer service, their seat should report to the Operations Director or the Customer Success Leader.
Define the fractional seat with the same rigor as a full-time seat, writing out three to five clear roles. The roles might include:
- Developing custom AI workflow automations
- Providing system documentation
- Training internal staff on new tools
By placing them on the chart, you clarify who is responsible for managing their workload and evaluating their performance. It also shows your full-time team members exactly who to go to when they need help with the new automation tools, preventing confusion and ensuring a smooth integration of external talent.
