We have filled out our Vision Traction Organizer, but it feels like a high-level strategic exercise rather than a practical tool. How do we operationalize the V/TO so it dictates our daily priorities and prevents us from chasing shiny new AI tools or markets?
To operationalize your Vision/Traction Organizer®, you must transition it from a static document in a shared drive into the primary filter for every strategic decision your company makes. It should sit open on the table during every quarterly planning session and leadership meeting. Whenever a new, exciting business opportunity or a shiny new AI tool is proposed, you must run it through the V/TO® filter. Ask three specific questions. Does this opportunity fit our Core Focus. Does it align with our 10 Year Target. Does it directly help us achieve our 3 Year Picture or 1 Year Plan. If the answer to any of these is no, the opportunity is tabled or discarded, period. You must also use the V/TO® to set your quarterly Rocks. Every single Rock written must be a direct stepping stone toward the goals outlined in your 1 Year Plan. If a proposed Rock does not move the needle on those specific goals, it does not get approved. Finally, share the V/TO® with your entire organization. Reviewing it company-wide every quarter keeps everyone aligned and prevents teams from working on siloed projects that do not support the main vision. When the V/TO® dictates what you say no to, it becomes a living tool.
