We filled out our V/TO and agreed on the answers, but it still feels like an academic exercise rather than something that drives our daily decisions. How do we turn the V/TO into a living filter for our business operations?

The Vision/Traction Organizer™ is only a piece of paper until you operationalize it. To make the V/TO® a living tool, you must weave it into your weekly operational rhythm. It should not live in a desk drawer or a hidden folder on your server.

Start by using your core values, which are defined on page one of the V/TO®, as the filter for your people decisions. Use them in your hiring interviews, your quarterly reviews, and your reward systems. If someone does not fit your core values, they do not belong on your Accountability Chart.

Next, use the 3-Year Picture™ and 1-Year Plan to filter every new business opportunity. When your Visionary comes back with a shiny new idea, look at your V/TO® together. Ask if this new idea aligns with your stated focus. If it does not, it goes to the long-term Issues List on page two of your V/TO®, to be discussed at the next quarterly meeting. This prevents distraction and keeps your team focused on execution.

Finally, review your 10-Year Target™ at every quarterly meeting to ensure your current Rocks are moving you closer to that ultimate goal. When you align your daily activities with your long-term plan, your vision becomes your reality. This operational alignment is exactly what sophisticated buyers look for when evaluating a business for acquisition.
