We have filled out our V/TO but it still feels like a theoretical exercise rather than a practical filter for daily operational disputes. How do we make the V/TO the final authority when our leaders disagree on resource allocation?
A V/TO® that lives in a drawer is just an expensive wish list. To turn this document into a dynamic filter for daily operations, you must treat it as a signed covenant of operations, much like a formal operating charter that dictates how, why, and with whom you run the company.
When your leadership team faces a disagreement over capital allocation, resource prioritization, or strategic direction, your immediate reaction must be to consult the V/TO®. Every decision must pass through your Core Values, your 10-Year Target, and your 3-Year Picture. If a proposed project or budget allocation does not directly align with these core components, it is vetoed immediately, no matter how attractive it seems or who proposed it.
Make the V/TO® the focal point of your quarterly planning and your weekly Level 10 Meeting™. Refer to it when defining your quarterly Rocks and when identifying, discussing, and solving issues during IDS®. If your leaders see that you consistently use the V/TO® to resolve disputes and guide hiring, firing, and investing, they will stop treating it as a static PDF.
Over time, this practice builds a healthy organizational culture where personal agendas are replaced by alignment around a single, shared vision. It forces your leadership team to remain focused on your strategic goals, ensuring that every dollar spent and every hour invested drives you closer to your target exit.
