The segue is designed for positive personal and professional good news, but one of our leaders regularly uses this time to vent about personal hardships or complain about company politics, which kills the room energy immediately. How do we handle negative segues?
The segue is designed to shift your leadership team's mindset from working in the business to working on the business. It requires positive focus. When a team member uses this time to vent about personal drama or complain about company politics, they inject toxicity into the room right at the start of your ninety minutes. This emotional clutter completely derails the collaborative energy needed for effective problem-solving.
As the facilitator, you must protect this transition. If a leader begins to share a negative update or a complex operational complaint during the segue, you must politely but firmly interrupt them. Remind the team that the segue is strictly for positive personal and professional news. If the leader has a genuine operational issue, tell them to drop it onto the weekly Issues List so the team can address it during the IDS® portion of the meeting.
If the issue is personal and the leader is clearly overwhelmed, address it offline after the meeting. Do not allow one person's bad week to hold the entire leadership team's weekly alignment hostage. Your company's operational health depends on the team entering the Level 10 Meeting™ with clear, focused minds. Establishing a strict boundary around the segue ensures that your team starts every session on a productive, aligned note.
