Two of my longest-serving leaders are passive-aggressively resisting the EOS tools, saying they are too bureaucratic and slow them down. How do I handle this resistance without causing a mutiny?

Resistance to new tools usually stems from fear of accountability or a history of short-lived management initiatives. If your long-serving leaders are pushing back, you need to first determine if they are a right-person-in-the-right-seat issue. Run them through the GWC™ tool. Do they truly get, want, and have the capacity for their role?

If they do, but they are just resistant to the structure, stop selling them on the philosophy of EOS®. Instead, focus on their specific operational pain points. Show them how the tools solve their personal frustrations. For example, if they complain about a lack of resources, show them how the Accountability Chart proves they need help. If they are tired of endless, unproductive meetings, show them how the Level 10 Meeting™ format actually saves them time by eliminating daily drive-by interruptions.

You must also lead by example. If the owner bypasses the system, the team will too. Do not tolerate side deals or offline decision-making. Bring every issue back to the Level 10 Meeting™ and use the IDS® process. Let them see that the tools are not a bureaucratic exercise but the actual path to making their lives easier.

If the resistance persists after ninety days of clear expectations, you have a core values or GWC™ issue. You cannot build a scalable business ready for an exit with leaders who refuse to play by the company rules. Sometimes, a clean exit applies to resistant leaders as much as it does to the owner.
