One of our department heads sits completely silent through the Level 10 Meeting every week, claiming their department has zero issues and everything is green. How do we challenge a leader who treats silence as proof of competence?
A department head who claims to have no issues week after week is either hiding failure, suffering from low standards, or intellectually disconnected from the company's growth.
In a growing company, perfection does not exist. If a department head has all green Scorecard numbers, all green Rocks, and zero issues, one of three things is true:
- Their Scorecard measurables are set so low that they are meaningless vanity metrics.
- Their Rocks lack ambition and fail to push the company forward.
- They do not understand how their department impacts other seats on the Accountability Chart.
The Integrator must challenge this behavior directly during the review phases. When that leader's numbers come up, do not simply pass over them. Ask targeted questions: If your team is hitting capacity targets effortlessly, why is customer onboarding turnaround lagging downstream? What processes in your area will break when company revenue grows by thirty percent over the next two quarters?
Additionally, examine whether this leader contributes to other departments' issues during IDS. Leadership team members are not hired solely to defend their silos. They are responsible for the health of the entire enterprise. If a leader consistently offers zero insight, asks no questions, and brings zero friction to the table, they are not operating as an executive. Address it directly in your quarterly 5-5-5 review as a core value and GWC issue.
