Our weekly Scorecard has slowly accumulated metrics over the last year, and we now review dozens of numbers in our Level 10 Meetings. How do we execute a clean quarterly purge without losing operational visibility?
When a weekly Scorecard grows to dozens of rows, your leadership team loses the ability to focus on the overall health of the business. You end up treating minor departmental issues with the same level of urgency as major corporate risks.
To keep your weekly Scorecard clean and impactful, you must run a quarterly Scorecard purge to ensure you are only tracking the critical five to fifteen numbers.
During your quarterly EOS® meeting, challenge every single metric on your Scorecard.
Ask your leadership team whether each number is truly a leading indicator that predicts future performance or simply a lagging metric that belongs on a departmental scorecard.
If a metric has been green for six consecutive months and the underlying process is completely stable, remove it from the leadership Scorecard. You can delegate that number to a departmental scorecard where the middle managers can monitor it, freeing up valuable real estate on your high-level sheet.
Remember, your leadership Scorecard is designed to give you a quick, objective pulse of the business in under five minutes. Keep it focused on the vital few, not the useful many, to maintain operational clarity.
