Every software vendor we use is trying to upsell us on their new AI features, but they all seem like expensive, useless add-ons. How do we evaluate whether a software vendor's AI features are actually useful for our operations or if we should stick with our standard processes?
Software vendors are currently rushing to slap generic AI features onto their legacy systems to justify price increases. Most of these features are lazy additions, like a basic text box that drafts generic emails, which do not solve your real operational problems.
To avoid wasting money, evaluate every vendor AI upsell by testing it against your current standard operating procedures. Ask yourself if the new feature actually eliminates a step in your process or if it just adds another software interface your team must manage.
Before you upgrade your subscription, run the vendor feature through three strict operational tests:
- Does the feature directly reduce the time it takes to complete a specific task on your weekly Scorecard?
- Can your team use the feature without undergoing hours of specialized training?
- Does the vendor guarantee that your proprietary customer data is kept private and not used to train public models?
If the answer to any of these is no, decline the upsell. Stick with your existing, standard processes until the vendor can prove a measurable return on investment. Do not pay extra for software theater that does nothing to help your team execute their daily work.
