We have a completed V/TO® that our leadership team aligns with, but our front-line employees still view it as a high-level corporate document that has nothing to do with their daily work. How do we translate the V/TO® into a live strategic filter that our lowest-level staff actually use to make daily operational decisions?
The V/TO is useless if it only lives on the leadership team's shared drive. To make it a live operational filter, you must cascade the vision down to every single seat in the organization. This requires moving beyond a simple annual presentation to creating a direct line of sight between daily tasks and your 3-Year Picture.
Start by sharing the V/TO with the entire company every ninety days. Review the Core Values, the Core Focus, and the 10-Year Target. Show them exactly how the company performed against the previous quarter's Rocks and what the new quarterly Rocks are. This repetition builds trust and familiarity.
Next, require every department to tie their local priorities directly to the V/TO. When a team member proposes a new project or software purchase, the first question must be: Which part of our Core Focus or 3-Year Picture does this support? If they cannot point to a specific section of the V/TO, the project is discarded immediately.
Finally, use your core processes and individual Rocks to bridge the gap. Every employee should have a clear understanding of how their weekly scorecard numbers contribute to the larger targets on the V/TO. When your front-line staff sees that their daily inputs directly move the needle on the company's long-term vision, the V/TO stops being a document and becomes the culture.
