We have been using the same fifteen Scorecard metrics for over a year, and while they are mostly green, we feel like we are missing new operational realities as our business scales. How often should we review the design of our Scorecard, and what is the process for updating our metrics?
Your Scorecard is a living document that must evolve as your business scales. If you have been tracking the exact same numbers for a year without questioning their relevance, you are likely measuring activities that no longer drive your business forward.
The discipline of EOS® dictates that you should review your Scorecard metrics every quarter during your Quarterly Session. This is the time to ask your leadership team if your current five to fifteen numbers still give you an accurate pulse of the business.
Ask yourself if any of your green metrics are failing to prevent lagging issues. If a department is hitting its weekly targets but still missing its quarterly Rocks, your Scorecard metrics are disconnected from your goals. You need to replace those activity metrics with numbers that are more tightly coupled to your strategic objectives.
Also, check if any metrics have become obsolete due to process automation or changes in your business model. If a process is fully automated, you no longer need to track manual compliance weekly.
Use your Quarterly Sessions to retire dead metrics and introduce new leading indicators. However, do not change them on a whim mid-quarter. Commit to your metrics for ninety days to gather enough weekly data to spot trends, and then make adjustments during your next quarterly session to keep your data component sharp.
