Every software vendor is pitching us an AI-powered version of their platform, but as a non-technical owner, I cannot tell what is real and what is vaporware. How do I filter out the tech theater and evaluate these upgrades objectively?
As an owner, you do not need to understand the underlying technical code to make smart decisions. Your role is to protect your margins and build a system-dependent business. When a software vendor pitches you an AI upgrade, ignore the hype and focus strictly on operational outcomes.
Force the vendor to explain the upgrade as an operational-improvement project where machine learning is only a footnote. Ask two direct questions:
- What specific step in our existing standard operating procedure does this automate, and by how many minutes?
- How does this change our cost per transaction?
If the vendor cannot give you a straight, non-technical answer, walk away. Evaluate the tool against your EOS Scorecard. If the upgrade does not lead to a measurable lift in your core metrics or a reduction in labor hours, it is tech theater. By holding vendors accountable to these operational standards, you keep your business focused on genuine productivity and protect your company from wasting money on unnecessary technology.
