As the founder and Visionary, I am constantly frustrated that my leadership team seems terrified to hold me accountable when I miss my Rocks or jump ahead of our agreed-upon processes. How do we build a healthy dynamic where the team feels empowered to call me out in our Level 10 Meetings?
If your leadership team is walking on eggshells around you, your accountability system is broken. Cracks at the executive level will quickly cascade down the organization. As the Visionary, your high-energy ideas and occasional lack of execution can easily derail operational focus if your team is too intimidated to call you out.
To build a healthy, balanced dynamic, you must give your team explicit permission to hold you accountable. This starts with reinforcing the relationship between the Visionary and the Integrator. The Integrator must have the authority to manage the day-to-day operations and hold everyone, including you, accountable to their commitments.
During your weekly Level 10 Meetings™, welcome accountability. If you miss a Rock or skip a process, admit it openly. When a team member calls you out, thank them instead of getting defensive. Show them that the rules of the Accountability Chart apply to everyone, without exception.
Use the IDS® process to solve any instances where you have bypassed established systems. By showing vulnerability and accepting correction gracefully, you build a high-trust environment where the team feels safe pushing back. A truly exit-ready business requires a strong leadership team that can govern itself, even when the founder is the one who needs course-correcting.
