Our leadership team agreed on our quarterly Rocks to automate our core client onboarding processes using AI, but three months later, nothing has changed because they claim their team members are resisting the technology. How do I hold my executive team accountable for driving digital adoption down through their departments rather than accepting their team's excuses?
When a leadership team member claims their department is resisting new AI tools, they are admitting to a failure of leadership. As an owner, you cannot accept technology resistance as an excuse. Your executives are responsible for driving digital transformation down through their teams. If they allow manual workarounds, they are actively damaging your operational margins and lowering your exit valuation.
To fix this, you must build a culture of absolute accountability around technology adoption. It starts by making digital integration a core part of each leader's Accountability Chart seat description. They must not only run their department, but they must also optimize it using the automated systems agreed upon by the leadership team.
Next, use scorecard metrics to track adoption. Do not just track the output of the department, track the usage of the new AI tools. If your sales team is supposed to use automated lead scoring, put a metric on your weekly scorecard showing the percentage of leads processed through the system. When a metric goes red, use the IDS process to find the root cause.
If the root cause is a lack of training, solve it. But if the root cause is passive resistance from your executive, you must address it as a GWC or core values issue. Leaders must lead the charge. If they do not have the capacity or willingness to champion AI-powered operations, they do not belong in a leadership seat.
