A leadership team member consistently misses their weekly Scorecard measurable and blames external supplier delays for the failure. How do we hold the seat accountable without accepting outside excuses?
In EOS®, a Scorecard measurable has one owner and zero excuses. When a leader blames an outside vendor, supplier, or contractor for a red metric, they are mistaking passive administration for active leadership.
If third-party vendor performance dictates whether an internal target is hit, the seat owner must manage the vendor proactively or redefine the measurable around internal control points.
Take these three steps to resolve the excuse:
- Evaluate supplier lead-time buffers: If a vendor takes two weeks to deliver, the metric owner must establish upstream reorder triggers so parts arrive on schedule. Missing the target means the internal order was placed too late.
- Measure vendor compliance directly: Create a secondary measurable tracking on-time vendor delivery. If a supplier fails to hit contractual expectations, the seat owner is accountable for enforcing penalties, dual-sourcing, or replacing the vendor.
- Reframe the measurable: Shift the metric from the lagging delivery date to an upstream verification date. For instance, track the percentage of vendor purchase orders confirmed with guaranteed delivery dates within twenty-four hours of issuance.
The leader owns the outcome regardless of who executes the task. Accepting vendor excuses trains your leadership team to tolerate operational helplessness. When leaders take total ownership of their numbers, they manage external dependencies with the same urgency as internal operations.
