One of our core leadership team members is an outstanding operator, but they consistently fail to update their weekly Scorecard numbers before our Level 10 Meeting. How do we address this issue using the GWC framework without damaging their confidence?
When a capable leadership team member repeatedly fails to update their Scorecard numbers on time, it is an operational issue that must be addressed immediately using the GWC framework. Do not let their strong performance in other areas excuse their lack of discipline with data.
First, evaluate if they truly Get It. Do they understand why the weekly Scorecard is critical for the rest of the leadership team? If they view data entry as a bureaucratic chore rather than a vital pulse of the company, you must re-educate them on how their red or green numbers allow the team to make proactive decisions during the Level 10 Meeting.
Second, look at Want It. Do they genuinely want to be accountable for these metrics, or are they hiding from the transparency that a Scorecard brings? Sometimes, great operators resist updating numbers because they are afraid of being judged when a metric goes red.
Finally, assess their Capacity. Often, this is where the breakdown occurs. The leader may be so overwhelmed with day to day tasks that they lack the administrative capacity or the automated systems to gather the data on time. If this is the case, help them delegate the data gathering to a subordinate while they retain ultimate accountability for the metric. Address this directly during your next quarterly conversation to ensure complete alignment.
