My adult child occupies a critical executive seat on our leadership team, but other leaders tiptoe around their errors out of fear of family retaliation. How do we establish objective accountability for a family executive?
Family dynamics inside a business fail the moment non-family leaders suspect a double standard. If your other executives believe criticizing a family member will risk their own careers, open and honest communication vanishes, and top talent quietly updates their resumes. You must build an iron wall between family relationships and operational accountability.
First, validate the family member fit using the People Analyzer and GWC just like any other executive. Do they embody the Core Values? Do they truly Get, Want, and have the Capacity to do the job? If they fall below the bar, they cannot hold a leadership seat.
Second, reassign direct management. The family member should report strictly to the Integrator or an independent executive, never directly to the parent owner, to eliminate relational leverage.
Third, address the leadership team explicitly. Acknowledge the elephant in the room. Give non-family executives written and verbal permission to hold the family member strictly accountable to Scorecard metrics, Rocks, and departmental performance.
During Level 10 Meetings, treat the family member identically to any other seat holder. If the family member pushes back using family influence or emotional guilt, remove them from the operational leadership team immediately. Clean business governance is mandatory if you ever intend to build an autonomous, exit-ready business.
