We need to hire an outside Integrator as our number two to prepare for an exit, but our current VP of Operations believes they are the natural heir to the seat and has threatened to quit if we hire over their head. How do we manage this transition without losing our top operational talent?

This is a classic growth bottleneck. Your VP of Operations is likely a fantastic executor but may lack the strategic capability to operate as a true EOS® Integrator who can lead an enterprise through a highly complex exit transaction. You must handle this with absolute clarity and zero ambiguity. Do not delay the hire to spare feelings. Schedule a private meeting and use the Accountability Chart to illustrate the difference between the VP of Operations seat and the Integrator seat. Show them that the Integrator role requires a completely different set of GWC capabilities, including managing all major functions of the business, driving the leadership team, and orchestrating the exit process. Explain that you want them to remain a vital part of the future of this company. Show them how a professional Integrator will actually free them up to focus on what they do best, which is running operations, rather than dealing with high level corporate structuring and corporate governance. If they still threaten to quit, you must let them. You cannot allow your organization to be held hostage by a leader who places their personal ambition above the health of the business. If they choose to leave, it proves they do not align with your core values or the greater good of the company. Prepare a transition plan just in case, but do not compromise on the leadership structure your company needs to reach the next level.
