I am ready to hire my first outside Integrator to take over day-to-day operations so I can focus on being a pure Visionary. However, I am terrified of hiring the wrong person and destroying what we have built. What are the absolute non-negotiable criteria I should look for when selecting and placing this person in the Integrator seat?
Hiring an outside Integrator is one of the most high-stakes moves an owner can make. To get this right, you cannot just look for a resume filled with operational credentials. You must start by looking at your Accountability Chart and defining the exact roles this seat requires.
First, the candidate must match your core values. There is zero room for compromise here. An Integrator who does not share your core values will quickly alienate your team, regardless of how smart they are.
Second, they must pass the GWC™ filter. They must truly get, want, and have the capacity to do the job. Getting it means they have an innate, intuitive understanding of how to orchestrate people, systems, and processes. Wanting it means they genuinely desire the relentless responsibility of day-to-day execution. Capacity means they have the emotional intelligence, time, and skills to manage your specific business complexity.
Third, they must have a natural chemistry with you. You do not have to be best friends, but you must have mutual respect and absolute trust. They must be willing to tell you no, and you must be willing to let them lead. If they are a yes-person, they are not an Integrator. Define the seat clearly, run a rigorous search based on these criteria, and use a ninety-day onboarding plan to transition control gradually.
