One of our highest-billing senior partners, who embodies our Core Values and has been with us for a decade, flatly refuses to use our new AI-driven project management and scoping systems. How do we address this resistance without ruining our company culture or losing a key rainmaker?
When a high-performing, core-value-aligned senior partner resists your new AI systems, you cannot ignore it, but you also cannot just fire them. You must address this using the direct, open and honest communication championed by the Owner's Box charter.
Start by scheduling a one-on-one meeting to get on the same page. Do not approach them with a technical argument. Instead, focus on the strategic picture. Explain how the AI tools directly support the company's long-term V/TO and capacity planning. Show them that by automating routine tasks, you are actually protecting their time, allowing them to focus on high-value client relationships and mentorship.
Listen to their objections. Often, high performers resist technology because they fear it will compromise the quality of their work. If their concern is quality, validate that. Use the IDS process to solve their specific concerns.
If they still refuse to adopt the systems after you have addressed their concerns, you must evaluate them using GWC. Do they truly understand, want, and have the capacity to operate in a modern, AI-leveraged company? If they lack the capacity or desire to change, they are holding the company back, and you must make a hard decision for the long-term health of the business.
