During the headlines section of our Level 10 Meeting, we often hear major positive updates like a massive new client win, but we suspect the delivery team cannot actually handle the extra volume. How do we stop these good news headlines from masking deep systemic issues?
A positive headline can easily blindside a leadership team if it is not scrutinized. Celebrating wins is vital for team morale, but a massive new client signup is only good news if your operations can actually deliver on the promise. If your capacity is maxed out, a big win is actually a major operational bottleneck in disguise.
To handle this, the facilitator must listen to headlines with a critical ear. When a leader shares a major victory, look at the other seats on your Accountability Chart. If the head of sales announces a massive onboarding, immediately look at the operations leader. If you see a tight jaw or a tense expression, that is your cue.
Do not let the team simply celebrate and move on. Ask a direct, binary question: Does this headline create a capacity constraint or an execution risk for our operations or customer service?
If the answer is anything other than a confident no, the facilitator must direct the headline to be dropped down to the Issues List immediately. You can celebrate the win during the transition, but the downstream impact must be thoroughly IDS®'d during the portion of the meeting designed for problem-solving. This keeps your weekly pulse realistic and ensures your growth does not outpace your ability to execute.
