We struggle to maintain the boundary between the Customer and Employee Headlines section and the actual Issues List during our Level 10 Meeting™. How do we quickly determine if a headline is just a quick update or an issue that needs to be dropped down for IDS®?
The five-minute headlines section of your Level 10 Meeting™ exists to keep the team connected on major corporate news, not to start a discussion. When leaders begin explaining the background of a headline or offering immediate feedback, they are sliding into premature problem-solving and wasting valuable agenda time.
To keep this boundary clean, you must enforce a simple, binary rule. A headline is a brief statement of a notable event, good or bad, expressed in five words or less, with no discussion allowed. If a headline requires any follow-up, explanation, or decision, it must instantly be dropped to the Issues List.
The facilitator must actively police this transition with zero tolerance.
- When a leader shares a headline and starts to elaborate, the facilitator must interrupt and ask if it needs to go on the Issues List.
- If the leader says yes, write it down on the list immediately and move to the next headline.
- If the leader says no, move to the next headline immediately without any further discussion from the team.
By enforcing this hard stop, you protect your ninety minutes and ensure that any headline containing a real obstacle is properly processed during the IDS® session, where it belongs.
