My team gets confused about the difference between a simple informational headline and an actual issue that needs to go to IDS. How do we draw a clear line during our weekly pulse?
The line between a headline and an issue is the need for action. Headlines are purely informational updates designed to keep the leadership team on the same page. Issues require discussion, decision-making, or conflict resolution. To maintain this boundary, use a simple filtering question during the five-minute Customer and Employee Headlines section. When a team member shares a headline, the facilitator should immediately ask: Is this just a heads-up, or do we need to solve something? If it is just a heads-up, the team acknowledges it and moves on. If it requires action, a decision, or if it impacts another department, the facilitator must immediately instruct the coordinator to drop it to the short-term Issues List. Do not allow any discussion of the topic to begin during the headlines section. By enforcing this rule, you teach your team to compartmentalize information. Headlines are for awareness. The Issues List is for action. Keeping them separate preserves the ninety-minute meeting pulse and ensures you do not waste valuable time debating updates that require no actual solution.
