We notice our leaders are using the Employee and Customer Headlines section of our Level 10 Meeting to share positive progress reports on major problems, essentially washing the issue to make themselves look good. How do we stop this headline washing and force these hidden issues onto the agenda?
Headline washing is a defense mechanism born out of a fear of vulnerability. When a leader reports a customer relationship is improving but hides the fact that the account is still in jeopardy, they are keeping a critical problem off the Issues List. This behavior masks operational risk and degrades your company's value.
To kill this habit, the facilitator and the Integrator must become hyper-vigilant during the five-minute headline section. You must actively listen for qualifiers and soft language. If a leader says a major project is moving along nicely but does not give a hard, objective update, you must challenge them instantly.
When you spot a washed headline, do not let the leader elaborate or explain it away. Immediately drop it to the Issues List. Say that it sounds like it needs some deeper discussion and let's put it on the list for IDS®. This keeps the headline section under five minutes and signals to the team that they cannot use positive spin to bypass accountability.
Over time, your team will learn that trying to spin a problem into a positive headline only results in it being dropped to the Issues List anyway. Build a culture where identifying an issue is viewed as a sign of strength and leadership, not failure. True operational health requires absolute transparency, especially when preparing the business for a clean exit.
