Our Head of Sales has been with us for eight years and is a perfect culture fit, but he flatly refuses to use our CRM or enforce pipeline logging for his team. This lack of clean pipeline data is a major red flag for our exit readiness. He fails GWC on the analytical and tracking parts of his modernized seat. How do we handle this?
This is a classic right person, wrong seat issue. Your Head of Sales may have been highly successful in the early days of your business, but as you prepare for an exit, the requirements of his seat have changed. Buyers demand clean, verifiable, and analytical data to justify your valuation, which makes CRM compliance a non-negotiable role for the sales leadership seat. To address this, you must run your Head of Sales through the GWC™ tool. Ask yourself three objective questions. Does he get it? Does he want it? Does he have the capacity to do it? In this scenario, he fails the capacity test because he cannot or will not manage the technical and analytical tools required for the seat. You cannot compromise on these standards just because of his long tenure. Your first step is to have an honest conversation. Share the updated Accountability Chart and explain why CRM utilization is a core responsibility of his seat. If he cannot adapt within a defined timeframe, typically thirty to ninety days, you must make a hard seat change. This does not mean you have to fire him if he is a core values fit. You can look for a different seat where his relationships and selling skills can shine, but you must put someone in the sales leadership seat who fully GWC's the analytical requirements. Your exit readiness depends on having leaders who embrace accountability and data.
