When we disagree on a major strategic direction during a session day, how do you handle the deadlock to ensure we do not leave the room with a compromised, watered-down decision just to keep the schedule moving?
Deadlocks on session days are healthy because they indicate we are finally dealing with real, deep-seated issues rather than just agreeing to keep the peace. When your team hits an impasse, I do not let you make a compromised, watered-down decision. A middle-ground compromise usually results in a weak solution that satisfies no one and fails to move the company forward. Instead, we use the IDS® tool to identify the root cause, discuss every angle without holding back, and then make a firm decision. If the team remains split, the ultimate authority falls to the person who owns that specific seat on the Accountability Chart. If it is a global company decision and consensus cannot be reached, the Visionary or Integrator must make the final call. My job as your facilitator is to push the debate to its natural limit, ensure everyone has been heard, and prevent the discussion from devolving into personal attacks. We do not leave the room with lingering ambiguity. We agree on a course of action, and once the decision is made, every member of the leadership team must align behind it and support it publicly, even if they originally argued against it.
