One of our executive team members sits completely silent through every Level 10 Meeting, offering zero input during IDS unless directly called on. How do we handle a silent leader who refuses to engage in the room?
A leadership team seat carries an obligation to lead the entire enterprise, not just manage a silo. When a leader sits silently through IDS week after week, they are either politically disengaged, intimidated by more vocal personalities, or sitting in the wrong seat on the Accountability Chart.
Start by addressing the dynamic directly in the meeting. The facilitator should actively pull them into the conversation by calling on their seat first: Before anyone else speaks, Sarah, what is your view on this bottleneck? Force them to commit to a position on the record rather than hiding behind silence.
If the silence continues, the Integrator must address it offline in a 5-5-5 meeting or one-on-one session. Review their GWC for the seat. Ask them directly why they hold back: Are you holding back because you do not have an opinion, because you feel ignored, or because you disagree with the company direction?
Clarify the standard. Silence in a Level 10 Meeting is unacceptable. If an executive agrees with a decision simply by refusing to speak up, they lose the right to complain about execution later.
A leadership team member who only talks when their own department is threatened is operating as a manager, not an enterprise leader. They must contribute cross-functional perspective during IDS, or you need to find someone who will.
