While we want to build trust, one of our leaders consistently uses the personal share during our weekly segue to deliver highly uncomfortable, deeply detailed personal overshares that hijack the emotional energy of the room. How do we set boundaries without destroying vulnerability?
The weekly segue is designed to transition your team from the operational grind into a focused, collaborative state. It requires a brief, professional share and a personal share. It is not a therapy session, nor is it a platform for airing personal grievances or oversharing highly sensitive details that make the rest of the leadership team uncomfortable. When this happens, it destroys the psychological safety of the room and derails the energy of the meeting before you even touch the Scorecard.
To correct this, the Integrator must have a direct, one-on-one conversation with the offending leader outside of the meeting. This conversation must be framed around your Core Values and the purpose of the transition. Explain that while we value vulnerability, the segue share must be kept to a high-level summary that allows the team to connect, not a detailed narrative that requires emotional processing. During the next Level 10 Meeting™, the facilitator should set the tone by going first and modeling a clean, tight segue. Limit your share to thirty seconds. If the leader starts to drift into oversharing again, the facilitator must gently but firmly intervene on the spot, thanking them for sharing and prompting the next person to go. Keep the transition professional and brief so you can preserve your collective energy for the actual work of the business.
