We have a member of our leadership team who sits silently through most of our Level 10 Meeting, only speaking when their scorecard metrics or rocks are reviewed. How do we get them to actively engage in IDS and contribute to solving company-wide issues?
Passive participation is a drag on your entire leadership team. When a leader sits silently through the IDS® portion of your Level 10 Meeting™, they are failing to bring the full value of their seat to the table. You are paying for their strategic mind and operational expertise, not just their status updates.
First, the Integrator must have a direct, one-on-one conversation with this leader outside of the meeting. Use your Core Values and the Accountability Chart as a guide. Ask them why they are holding back. They might feel that their opinion is not valued, or they might be struggling to think on their feet in a fast-paced environment. Diagnose the root cause of their silence.
Second, during the live meeting, the facilitator must actively pull this leader into the discussion. Do not let loud voices dominate. If you are solving a cross-functional issue, ask them directly: How does this impact your department, and what is your perspective on the solution? Force them to take a stand.
Finally, remind the entire team of your Charter. Healthy conflict and open, honest communication are non-negotiable. If a leader consistently refuses to engage in solving the company's toughest problems, they do not GWC™ their seat. You cannot afford to have passengers on your leadership team, especially if you are building the company for a clean exit. Every seat must actively drive traction.
