Our five-minute segue regularly gets derailed when a leader uses their professional update to vent about a client or internal process, dragging the team's energy down before we even start. How do we keep the segue positive and energetic without policing their feelings?
The segue is designed to transition your minds from running the business to working on the business. It is a psychological gear shift. When a leader uses this time to dump their frustrations, they are poisoning the well before the meeting even starts, pulling the entire team back down into the weeds of daily firefighting.
As the facilitator, you must protect this boundary ruthlessly. A professional win is a win, not an opportunity to air grievances or state operational problems. If a leader starts venting, you must interrupt them immediately. Let them know that while their frustration is likely valid, the segue is reserved exclusively for positive wins. Tell them to frame the issue in one sentence and drop it straight to the Issues List so it can be handled during the IDS® portion of the meeting.
Do not worry about policing feelings; worry about protecting the collective energy of your leadership team. A successful Level 10 Meeting™ requires absolute focus and healthy, constructive debate. You cannot achieve that if the room is deflated by five minutes of complaining. Force the team to share genuine wins. If they cannot think of one, they can pass. Keep the momentum high, transition quickly, and handle the real frustrations where they belong, which is in the problem-solving section.
