How do we stop our weekly segue from turning into a cynical, low-energy gripe session when the company is going through a tough quarter, without forcing fake positivity?
During a challenging business stretch, forcing fake positivity is toxic. If your leadership team is facing missed metrics, failing Rocks, or market headwinds, forcing people to share a superficial personal win can feel completely out of touch. However, letting the five-minute segue turn into a cynical venting session will destroy the momentum of the entire ninety minutes. The purpose of the segue is to transition your brains from the daily grind into a focused, collaborative state. If your team is struggling, shift the focus of the segue to gratitude, small operational victories, or personal resilience. Ask a structured question like: What is one small area where our team showed incredible resilience this week? Or ask for a personal win that is completely unrelated to the current work stress. This approach acknowledges the difficulty of the quarter while keeping the energy productive. The facilitator must be incredibly disciplined. If a team member uses the segue to start complaining about a red metric or a client issue, the facilitator must stop them immediately. Politely tell them to park that grievance on the issues list for IDS® later in the meeting. Keep the transition clean, professional, and brief. You must protect the energy of the room to ensure you have the strength to tackle the real problems.
