One of our department heads regularly arrives at our Level 10 Meeting with incomplete scorecard data, claiming they did not have time to compile the numbers or that our systems were lagging. How do we address this missing data without letting them off the hook or delaying the meeting?
The weekly scorecard is the pulse of your operational health. When a leader consistently shows up to the Level 10 Meeting™ with empty cells, they are flying blind and forcing the rest of the leadership team to do the same. This behavior breaks trust and halts accountability.
To solve this, you must establish a non-negotiable rule: the scorecard must be fully updated before the meeting starts. There are no excuses. If a system is down or a number is delayed, the metric owner is still responsible for finding a proxy number or manually gathering the data.
If a leader fails to update their metrics, do not let them off the hook during the meeting. The facilitator should not allow them to spend five minutes explaining why the data is missing. Instead, the missing data itself must be immediately dropped to the weekly Issues List as a red flag.
During IDS®, the team must address the root cause of the missing data. Is the leader struggling with their workload? Are our data tracking systems poorly designed? Do they truly GWC™ their seat on the Accountability Chart? By turning the missing data into an issue, you hold the leader accountable without letting their explanation derail the rest of the agenda.
