If our leadership team shows up to a quarterly session with half of our Rocks incomplete, how do you facilitate that breakdown?
If your team shows up to a quarterly session with half of their Rocks incomplete, we do not engage in finger-pointing. We treat the failure as a concrete experience to study and learn from. We use the reflective observation process to analyze the root cause of the failure. We ask: Was the Rock poorly defined? Did we lack the resources? Or did we suffer from a lack of personal accountability? We use identity-based framing to change how the team talks about failure. We move from defensive language like: I could not finish this because of urgent fires, to ownership-focused statements like: I did not prioritize this Rock. Once we identify the systemic issue, we use IDS® to solve it. This ensures that a missed Rock becomes a valuable learning opportunity that strengthens your operational discipline for the next quarter.
