Our Head of Finance is a brilliant technical expert but refuses to participate in our weekly Level 10 Meetings, claiming they are a waste of his time. How do we handle this structural resistance on our leadership team?
This is a core values and structural discipline issue that you must address immediately. The Level 10 Meeting™ is the heartbeat of your operating system, and participation is non-negotiable for every leadership team member. By opting out, your Head of Finance is violating Our Charter, specifically the commitment to Trust and being on the Same Page. He is also signaling to the rest of the organization that he is above the system.
To resolve this, you must have a private, one-on-one conversation. Frame the discussion around your core values, particularly Humbly-Confident and Grow or Die. Explain that his technical brilliance is wasted if he is not aligned with the rest of the team on weekly Rocks and issues.
Use the IDS® tool to identify why he feels the meetings are a waste of time. It may be that the team is not structured correctly, or that the issues discussed are not relevant to finance.
Solve those structural problems, but make it clear that his active participation in the Level 10 Meeting™ is a requirement of his seat. If he continues to resist, you have a Right Seat, Wrong Person situation, and you must prepare to find a successor who respects the team's operational structure.
