We have a key leadership team member who runs our operations department well under our old manual systems, but they are completely resisting our push to implement AI and modern automation tools. How do we handle a legacy leader who is holding the entire company back from scaling?
In an AI-driven business environment, resistance to operational efficiency is a fatal flaw for a leader. If your head of operations is clinging to manual, outdated workflows because they are comfortable, they are actively capping your company's value and risking your exit readiness.
First, evaluate them using the GWC™ framework. Do they truly have the capacity to lead this technological shift? If they lack the technical understanding, that can often be solved with training. If they lack the desire or the mental flexibility to adapt, you have a GWC™ issue. A leader who does not want to evolve cannot remain on the leadership team.
Sit down with them and paint a clear picture of the future. Explain that automating repetitive tasks is not about cutting heads, but about freeing up their team's capacity to handle higher-value activities. Give them a specific, measurable Rock for the next quarter to implement a defined AI workflow or automated system in their department.
If they miss the deadline or continue to drag their feet, you must make a hard choice. You cannot allow one person's comfort zone to dictate the velocity of your entire business. If they cannot scale to meet the future demands of the seat, you must find someone who can.
