Some members of our leadership team complain that the highly structured EOS® tools are too rigid and destroy their creative freedom and entrepreneurial spirit. How do we overcome this specific type of resistance without alienating our top performers?
This resistance is common among high performers who confuse lack of structure with freedom. The reality is that true creativity requires discipline, and structure actually breeds freedom. When you lack a clear operating system, your top performers waste their creative energy navigating operational chaos, fighting fires, and guessing what is expected of them. EOS® does not stifle talent; it focuses it. To address this resistance, you must hold a direct, unsentimental conversation with these team members. Explain that the Accountability Chart, Scorecard, and Level 10 Meeting™ are designed to clear away administrative friction, not add to it. Show them that by establishing clear expectations and boundaries, they actually gain more autonomy within their designated seats. Let them know that they are fully empowered to run their departments, provided they consistently hit their weekly metrics and quarterly Rocks. If they continue to resist, you must evaluate if they truly have the GWC™ for their seats. A brilliant performer who refuses to play by the team operating system will eventually cap your company's growth and derail your exit strategy. You cannot allow individual preferences to hold your entire organization hostage.
