One of our key leadership team members is openly resisting our EOS rollout, claiming that the Scorecard and Level 10 Meetings are micromanagement tools that slow down their actual work. How do we break through this resistance?
Resistance from a key executive is a common hurdle, and it usually stems from a fear of exposure or a lack of understanding. When a leader claims the tools are micromanagement, they are often hiding a fear of accountability.
Your first step is to sit down with them outside of the quarterly session and have a candid conversation. You must determine if this is a conative issue, a cultural misalignment, or simply change fatigue.
Use the GWC™ tool to evaluate them in their seat. Do they truly understand the role, do they want it, and do they have the capacity to deliver:
- If they lack the conative capacity, they may feel overwhelmed by the rapid-fire decision-making of the Level 10 Meeting™.
- If they are a great cultural fit but are struggling with the structure, help them see that the Scorecard is actually a tool for their own freedom. It protects them by objectively proving their value without subjective debates.
Explain that the operating system is non-negotiable. Adopt a Grow or Die mindset. If they refuse to align with the core tools of EOS®, they are signaling that they do not want to be part of the future of the company. You cannot allow one resisting leader to hold back the entire team. If they cannot align with the tools after coaching, you must make the hard decision to replace them.
