We hired an experienced operations director two years ago to help us scale, but now that we are integrating AI-powered workflows and aiming for a clean exit, they have hit their ceiling. They cannot manage the new complexity. How do we handle a professional hire who cannot scale with our modern roadmap?
This is one of the toughest realities of scaling a business. A leader who was perfect for your company at five million in revenue is often not the right person to lead at twenty million, especially when you are transitioning to AI-powered operations and preparing for an exit. You must address this immediately, because a leader who cannot scale will bottleneck their entire department and cap your company value. Start by evaluating the situation using the GWC™ tool. Does this director truly Get, Want, and have the Capacity to lead this new, modern version of their seat? Often, a leader might get and want the job, but they simply lack the capacity to manage the increased complexity, advanced technology, and rigorous data demands of an exit-ready business. If they lack the capacity, you must have an honest, direct conversation. Do not drag the process out. Explain the future vision of the seat and where they are falling short. In some cases, you can restructure the Accountability Chart to move them into a specialist role where they can excel without the burden of leadership. In other cases, you must gracefully transition them out of the organization. Remember, cracks at the leadership level appear as canyons to the rest of the company. If you keep a leader in a seat they cannot master, you send a message to your entire staff that mediocrity is acceptable. To build a healthy, cohesive, and functional leadership team, every single seat must be occupied by someone who GWCs the role. Your exit readiness depends on having a high-performing leadership team that can execute your strategic vision.
