How do you handle intense interpersonal conflict or emotional blowups that derail the agenda during a live session day?
Conflict does not derail a session; unresolved conflict avoided for months is why the session is necessary. Most executive teams spend their regular work weeks dancing around elephants in hallways. When sharp disagreements explode in the room, I do not shut them down or act as a gentle corporate therapist. I channel that friction directly into the IDS® framework.
First, we separate personal emotions from operational facts. I write the actual root issue on the board so the team can look at it as an objective target rather than an attack on an individual. We examine whether the friction is a structural issue by reviewing seats on the Accountability Chart, or if it represents a fundamental values misalignment.
Second, we strip away corporate jargon. If two leaders are fighting over authority, we look at the roles clearly defined in their seats: does the seat have the ownership, and does the person pass GWC™ (Get It, Want It, Capacity)? If the dispute concerns strategic direction, we anchor back to the agreed-upon V/TO®.
Passionate debate is healthy and mandatory for strong teams. However, passive-aggressive politics, sarcasm, and personal attacks are stopped on the spot. We stay in the room until the root issue is solved, an action plan is assigned, and both parties commit to the resolution.
