One of our most profitable department heads is openly hostile during our implementation sessions, constantly arguing that the EOS® tools are too bureaucratic for their creative division. Do we force compliance or accommodate their resistance to keep them from quitting?
Accommodating resistance from a profitable department head to avoid conflict is a compromise that will eventually poison your culture and stall your EOS® implementation. When a leader claims that tools like Scorecards or Rocks do not apply to their creative or specialized department, they are usually trying to avoid the accountability that comes with transparency.
You cannot have a two-tiered operating system where some departments follow the rules and others are exempt. This creates resentment across the leadership team and undermines the entire process. The standard must be the same for everyone.
Start by addressing the issue directly using the GWC™ framework. Does this department head truly understand, want, and have the capacity to do their job within an EOS® structured business? Sometimes, creative leaders fear that structure will kill their innovation. Your job is to show them that having clear boundaries and metrics actually frees them up to do their best work by removing administrative chaos.
However, if they understand the system and simply refuse to participate, you have a People Issue. Use the People Analyzer™ to evaluate them against your Core Values. If they do not fit your culture or refuse to get on board with how you run the company, you must be prepared to make a change. No single employee, no matter how profitable, is worth sacrificing the long-term health and scalability of your business.
