My cousin is a highly capable director on our leadership team, but they frequently bypass our Integrator to complain directly to me about organizational decisions, citing our family bond. How do I shut down this backdoor communication without causing a major rift at home?
This is a classic structural issue that destroys the authority of your Integrator and fractures leadership team health. When a family member bypasses the chain of command, they are exploiting their relationship to avoid accountability. This behavior creates a toxic environment where non-family executives feel like second-class citizens.
To fix this, you must establish a hard operational boundary. The next time your cousin comes to you to complain about a decision or bypasses the Integrator, stop them immediately. Tell them that you love them as a family member, but on the Accountability Chart, they report to the Integrator.
Instruct them to take the issue directly to the Integrator or bring it to the next Level 10 Meeting™ as an issue to be solved through the IDS® process. You must also notify your Integrator that you sent your cousin back to them, reinforcing the Integrator's authority.
If you continue to listen to these complaints, you are the bottleneck. You are actively undermining your number two and telling the rest of the organization that your structure is a sham. Professionalizing your business means that family ties do not grant special access. Run your company like a business and love your family at home.
