We are rolling out the Accountability Chart to our middle managers, but several of our long-term team members are taking their new seat descriptions personally, feeling that their job titles have been downgraded. How do we handle this ego blow?

It is natural for employees to feel anxious when you introduce the Accountability Chart, especially if they have been with the company for a long time. In traditional organizations, job titles are a major source of personal identity and status. When you transition to EOS®, you are shifting the focus from ego-driven titles to clear, functional accountability.

To handle this transition without causing resentment, you must educate your team on the difference between a title and a seat. A title is what they put on their business card or LinkedIn profile for the outside world. A seat is how we define their internal roles, responsibilities, and accountability within the operating system.

Sit down with these team members and explain that the Accountability Chart is designed to set them up for success, not to diminish their value. Walk them through their seat's five major roles and ensure they truly GWC™ the seat. Show them how this clarity protects them from being blamed for things outside their control and allows them to focus on what they do best.

If they continue to struggle with the change, it may be a sign of a deeper alignment issue. You must be firm: the health of the organization depends on having the right people in the right seats, and we cannot compromise our structure to soothe individual egos.
