We have a dominant, high-D personality on our leadership team who constantly talks over other members and dictates solutions during IDS®, preventing other voices from being heard. How do we handle this dominant dynamic during our Level 10 Meeting™?
A dominant leader who monopolizes the discussion during IDS® destroys the collaborative power of your leadership team. When one person dictates the solutions, the rest of the team checks out, leading to poor buy-in and weak execution of the resulting To-Dos. You must address this behavior immediately to protect the health of your meeting.
The facilitator must actively use their authority to manage the room. When the dominant leader starts to interrupt or take over, the facilitator must step in. Use direct, neutral language like thank you, we have your perspective, now I want to hear from everyone else before we make a decision.
Another powerful tool is to strictly enforce the rule of stating your view once during the Discuss phase of IDS®. This prevents the dominant person from repeating their points or responding to every single comment made by others. Force them to wait until everyone has spoken.
If the behavior persists, the Integrator must have a private conversation with the leader outside of the meeting. Frame the feedback around the health of the team and their GWC™ for their seat. Explain that their role is to help the team solve problems collectively, not to dominate the room. A great leader knows when to speak and when to listen.
