We have a highly dominant head of sales who monopolizes the IDS portion of our Level 10 Meeting, bulldozing other leaders and forcing their own solutions through. How does our Integrator facilitate the room to shut down this dominant behavior without demotivating our top producer?
A dominant leader who bulldozes the room kills the healthy debate required for true issue-solving. When other team members shut down or withdraw to avoid conflict, you lose the diverse perspectives needed to find the best solutions.
Your Integrator must step up and actively manage the room dynamics. This is not about punishing your top producer; it is about protecting the team's collaborative health.
During IDS, the Integrator should implement a simple round-robin facilitation technique. Instead of allowing open discussion where the loudest voice wins, go around the table and ask each leader for their input individually. Specifically call on the quieter members of the team first.
If the sales leader interrupts or tries to dominate, the Integrator must intervene immediately and say, I want to hear from the rest of the team first, then we will get your input.
If the behavior persists, the Integrator must address it offline in a one-on-one meeting. Frame the feedback around the company's core values and the team's commitment to the charter.
Explain to the sales leader that while their drive and expertise are highly valued, their facilitation style is hindering the development of the rest of the leadership team. Coach them to ask more questions and speak last. This preserves their motivation while teaching them to lead with humility.
