Our lead product visionary on our leadership team is a genius who drives our innovation, but they refuse to be held accountable to weekly Scorecard metrics or quarterly Rocks, claiming it stifles their creativity. How do we handle this accountability resistance without losing our competitive edge?

Genius is not an excuse for bypassing the system that runs your company. When a leadership team member is allowed to opt out of accountability, it creates a double standard that breeds resentment and destroys the cohesion of the team. Cracks at this level will quickly spread throughout the entire organization. To resolve this, you must help this individual understand that structure does not stifle creativity, it actually frees up space for it. A clear Accountability Chart, weekly Scorecard metrics, and quarterly Rocks provide the boundaries within which creative freedom can thrive. Sit down with them outside of your regular meetings and review their seat on the Accountability Chart. Do they truly GWC™ the seat? If they want the seat, they must accept the accountability that comes with it, including running their department through the Level 10 Meeting™ structure. If they refuse to track metrics or execute Rocks, they are demonstrating a lack of respect for the rest of the team and the company's core values. If they cannot or will not adapt, you may need to move them out of a leadership seat and into an individual contributor role where their creative genius can be leveraged without disrupting the operational discipline needed to prepare the business for an exit.
