One of our key leadership team members is highly competent but has checked out, openly admitting they just want to maintain the status quo while the rest of us want to scale. How do we address a leader who violates our Grow or Die mindset without causing a mass exodus?

This is a classic case of having the right person in the wrong seat, or more accurately, someone who no longer shares your company's core values. In our operating system, Grow or Die is a non-negotiable filter. A leader who openly fights for the status quo is actively holding back the entire organization.

You must address this disconnect directly. Use the three pillars of our Charter: Trust, Same Page, and Yes to Strategy and Structure. Sit down for a candid conversation. Mirror back their comments about wanting to maintain the status quo. Explain that the company's long-term targets on the V/TO® require continuous improvement, innovation, and scaling.

Ask them if they are willing and able to recommit to the Grow or Die mindset. Frame this as a choice. If they want to remain on the leadership team, they must actively own the strategic Rocks required to scale their department. They cannot simply maintain; they must build.

If they admit they no longer have the energy or desire to scale, you must plan a transition. Keeping a leader who has checked out will breed resentment among their high-performing peers. Work together to transition them out of their leadership seat into an individual contributor role, or prepare a respectful exit plan. Do not let the fear of a mass exodus prevent you from maintaining your core values. Your true high performers will respect you for holding the line.
