Our Chief Technology Officer is an absolute genius who built our entire proprietary platform, but they are incredibly arrogant and constantly belittle other members of the leadership team during IDS. How do we address this toxic behavior when their technical knowledge is critical to our survival?

Keeping a brilliant jerk on your leadership team is a short-sighted strategy that destroys your culture and caps your growth. No matter how brilliant their technical skills are, their toxic behavior creates defensive, silent team members who refuse to share their real opinions. This lack of trust will eventually paralyze your executive team.

You must evaluate this leader using the People Analyzer. They may have the GWC™ to run their seat, but they clearly fail your core values. On a healthy leadership team, core values are non-negotiable. If you allow one person to violate them because of their technical expertise, you are telling the rest of the company that your values are just empty words on a wall.

Sit down with your Chief Technology Officer for a direct, unsentimental conversation. Show them the specific examples of their toxic behavior and explain how it violates your core values. Be clear that this behavior must change immediately if they want to remain in their seat.

If they are willing to change, help them. But if they refuse to adapt or show no improvement, you must transition them out of their leadership seat. You can move them to a highly valued individual contributor role where they can focus solely on technical development without managing people or participating in strategic leadership decisions. If that is not possible, you must terminate their employment and find a replacement who fits both your culture and the seat requirements.
